USB, MP3 Playlists and NMEA output

Postby Ned on Wed Jul 22, 2009 11:22 am

Ok, looked right thru the doco on the VMS site... seems there isn't much other than installing/using mapping software/Ipod doco/radio, so... please, can someone a bit smarter than me answer the following....

How do you make playlists for the MP3's on the USB stick, can you have more than one.
Is the playlist made on the AVNC or can you do it on a PC before hand. Where do you store it?

Can you have more than one USB stick attached (cord comes with two sockets) at the same time.

What is is biggest size storage you can attach.

Can you view pictures on the AVNC from the USB stick.. if so, what format??

Is there any way of getting the NMEA GPS output thru the USB port.

Thanks in advance,,

Ned.

G'day Ned,

The mapping software comes on the SD card you buy at the time with your VMS so installing it isn't required. There is a DVD of maps and a computer. If you purchased through GPSOZ it would be set up when you bought it.

Your main concerns seem to be around the music and play lists. I have used up to 8gig memory sticks, but currently have a 4gig in there. Playlists can be generated from your Windows Media Player. I haven't tried to use the secondary USB plug. I used a talking book last that took 1500kms to drive with. You can store music on your 16gig SD card, but you may offend your maps storage then. There is a Movie and picture capability with the memory stick, from the Console, but I haven't tried to use it. E-books as well. Formats? I haven't bothered. I have mine for travelling, even DVDs are very distracting

Why would you look to getting NMEA output through your USB? Under the standard software, it is a cut down Windows CE. If you wrote something specifically, you may, but the system is about navigation with music, movies, news rather than a tailored other system which may cost you thousands extra. You can get NMEA through a GPS mouse USB.

Cheers
John

Thanks John,,

I guess I'll have to get on the other computer that has win media player and have a play.

The SD card situation is a bit of a problem as you now can only have an 8G card with the upgraded software, which is locked to the card's ID. Makes the 16G card not usable, if you want 2009 maps (street navigator), and there quite a few changes to the older maps etc within street navigator, lots of wrong speed zones, roads (new and existing), etc.

The NMEA string would be for location feed to skylab and other comms satellites, without needing a second GPS.

I would be storing my pictures from camera to the USB stick, as well as the MP3's... just wondered if I could view them from the screen. The USB stick is actually 64Gb, so I have plenty of extra removable storage.

Guess I'll have to play with the settings again... VMS provide doco on how to use radio/TV (now gone)/Ipod/DVD player, but none on file formats that are supported... eg MP3, PDF, DOC etc

Any way thanks for your help, I'll have to spend a day playing in the truck.

Ned.

Edit...

OK had a play with win media player.... makes weird playlist files with .asx extension.... my main question is now...
How do I make a playlist ON the AVNC unit ???

Hi Ned,

Pass but I think others are answering this well.

Can you have more than one USB stick attached (cord comes with two sockets) at the same time.
No the second one is there to provide power only to devices that ave two USB inputs eg HDD

What is is biggest size storage you can attach.
I would imagine 64GB. Haven;t seen a 128GB stick yet.

Can you view pictures on the AVNC from the USB stick.. if so, what format??
Yes, Jpg and mpeg

Is there any way of getting the NMEA GPS output thru the USB port.
