OzTopo v3 Upgrade cost estimates?

OzTopo v3 Upgrade cost estimates?

Postby mlenser on Fri Mar 27, 2009 8:10 pm

With OzTopo v3 not too far away (I think?) is there any information regarding the cost of upgrading from v2.1?
Will those of us loyal customers since v1.0 be rewarded with cheaper upgrades?

Regards,
Mike.

Current owners of V1 or v2 will be able to upgrade to V3 at a reduced price. ie not the full $229. We haven't done the numbers yet but the extra content, routing, CAMPS5 etc, have cost us more. Also processing the extra data along with testing and QA will again be addional costs that we need to factor in. Question for previous owners, what additonal $$$'s would you put on these features? Given that V1 to V2 was $99 upgrade this will be the minimum that V3 upgrades will cost.

Brian

I will pay!! Routing is a great bonus tool, but sourcing several data sources to build the POI's, place names and the like is where its at. As a pipeline operator by day, and dirt bike rider by weekend, the value of the tracks detail you provide is exceptional. Also as a GIS user/builder I can only emphasise your comment in another post about the additional effort/workflows required to integrate additional data sources. Insane task to get your head around, and one you would never understand unless you had done it. Particularly hard to fathom from GPSers not exposed to attribute databases as apposed to waypoints.

Much praise for taking the step!

In saying that (here we go with my two cents...), I have noticed that you have some catching up to even geosciece aust 250k for place names and POI's (strictly refering to offroad areas, where I assume the majority of users/devotees purchase for). And not taking away from the 'immeasurably superior track detail' in same areas.

Also watercoarses (and lack of names for existing featurs) are very thin in areas we use (east/south east/north of Perth within 300km). We would greatly value data improvements in creeks, rivers, etc for our use.

As 'concientious' dirt bike riders, we make an effort to keep a buffer, or "tone down" while near/crossing walking trails (Bibbulman Track is one frequent sppedbump) to not impose on whatever they do. But the tracks don't show any different unless you hover the pointer over feature where the name pops up. Is there a line symbol that can make walking/mointain bike trails more prominent? Also, we come accross several mountain bike trails not in dataset, and only know we're on them when we see those little triangles on trees/posts. I have just seen another post requesting same, but for using trails. I can't advise source of data, as have tried to sourve tracks for trails myself, without success.

So... great work on directing the product developemnt where we see great value on top of an already quality product.

Keep the focus in the bush.

Keep a focus on efficiency. Data mash can bog down, costs heaps, and we want you to make heaps, so we can continue to eagerly await your next version!!

The idea behind v2 was to use single data source ie Map Data Science. Now that we have the process down pat (!), we can now expand out to include data from other sources in V3 - ie one step at a time. However having said that and you have mentioned it too, distilling multiple data sets is not easy, time consuming, which of course can lead to a poor end product. We are already seeing V3 take longer than we hoped but the emphasis will always be "we'll only release when we're happy with the final product"

cheers and thanks for the feedback

Any closer to giving an ETA for V3? Really don't want to buy TopoAus but I can't wait for ever..... a general idea would be helpful.

Great thanks....

What are the chances of doing a deal where in I buy V2 now and then pay the difference between what I paid for V2.1 and the price of V3 as an upgrade when V3 is released? That way you have my business and I have a topo in the mean time.... :?:

Gidday

We are currently planning V3 at the same price as V2. For V1 & V2 custoemrs there will be reduced price upgrade option. (v1->v2 upgrade is $99, we're hoping to make Vx->V3 around the same price)

How does that sound?

Well to be honest, not all that attractive. I'd end up paying $99 for less than 3 months of use of V2 (assuming it is released in December). Not exactly value for money.

Sounds a reasonable price to me, but then I have had V2 since March 08.

When I get V3 installed on PC & GPS, will V2.1 still be installed as a separate mapset, or will V3 overwrite it?

It's common practice for software providorsto sell a product within a months of new release with a free upgrade. Garmin are one, but it is common across all fields of software. I was hoping Oztopo would be willing to do the same.

I am offering to go one step further and pay any price difference between what I paid and what V3 is released for.

You'll just have to wait until it's released then. :)

Seperate product, in Maprource and on the GPS (and a new code.)

Yes we will do the same but not until we have firm dates.
