New feature requests

Questions, answers and general discussion about OZtopo - Australian Topographical maps for Garmin GPS units

New feature requests

Postby gpsoz on Thu Jan 24, 2008 11:37 am

We're already the next version(s) of OZtopo and are happy to take requests of what would like to be included in future versions. Sure everybody would like everything but the are some constraints that we must work within, eg 2GB max file size.

So give us some ideas...

cheers

One thats on our list already is a MAC version. We're working with Garmins curent tools & products for MAC and it looks do-able. See PROJECT bobcat at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... sp?id=3886

We're thinking of changing the the upper zoom level of town names,

ie you'll see city names at higher zoom levels.

Feedback?

thanks

My Wish list

Route-able roads and tracks!!!
Support DEM Data....(So I can use the 3D MAP & get a good looking Relief Map)
More map detail (Bike paths/walking tracks/Bridges/Carparks)
More POI....(Landmarks/Geographic features/Lookouts/Fuel stations/Toilets)
Have Separate ground colors for the type of land (metropolitan/Urban = Gray, Rural = Tan/Yellow, Forest/Bush = Green)

I have noticed that the topo map set runs to a LOT of tiles, and a LOT of space on the sd card. Is it possible to both reduce the number of tiles/maps associated with the topo set, as it tends to eat into the 2048 limit quite substantially, and to decrease the space required, possibly a good compression algorithm or some such. Just a wish........ :D

Oh yeah, routable would be nirvana!

We have redeuced the sapce required for V2.1 to 1.4GB vs 1.9+ in V2.0. We feel this is a good balance between detail and compression. This gives you around 600MB to add City nav (curerntly 156MB), Bluechart (22MB) and a few other maps that you may have and still not reach the 2GB map limit. BTW min sized mSD card and SD cards now orderable are 2GB...

Ability to log mapping errors on-line, and also to be able to download corrections and updates to the maps on a regular basis.

Current version of OZTopo I am using (2.1) will lose all detail at zoom levels over 1.5 km from memory. This means that when out in the boonies it is impossible to get the "big picture", as the screen just goes blank, a particularly useless feature. Shonkymaps goes out to 3k or 5k (Don't exactly remember) and T4A just seems to zoom out endlessly and lose little or no detail, very handy (although it has much less detail).
Can we get the zoom display beefed up somehow?

Zoom changes occur at 3km wiht map deail (both GPS and PC) set to most/high

We're looking at changing this in V3. Its not easy. If you change it in the outback, city areas become very "crowded" and hard to read.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I didn't think it would be a simple matter  but I think it is worth pursuing. When in remote areas, if I need to get an overall idea of where I am it is just hopeless. As you will be aware, zooming out just gives a blank screen - nothing displayed - and it is probably the most frustrating "feature" of your otherwise nifty software. I understand the issue with screen crowding, especially in urban areas. Perhaps 2 classes of display, depending on whereabouts one is? Tag urban areas with the current zoom type, and extra-urban areas with full detail at all zoom levels? Just a thought, I'm no expert.
