We had a customer today saying that in fact it was a 7" screen! Maybe there are two new models?

Peth Map Centre told me last week that the new Hema Navigator has a 5 inch screen and can be connected to a reversing camera if required. Other than this, basically the same featrures and maps as the existing 4.3 inch screen model. Expected release is early December @ RRP of $995. Perth Map Centre are taking orders for these and will be offering a special package deal at the Perth 4WD show this weekend (13 Nov)

Cheers

Hi Les,

Not sure what you mean by true topo. They will be the raster form of the 1:250k NATMAP series and Hema updated 2009 destination series, ie Cape York, kakdau etc

If you where hoping like me that New Hema 5 would have a NMEA output. Abandon all hope. Confirmed from Hema Tech Support, it does not. Hema, with your redesign, you have missed the idea opportunity to include it.
I am told that I am the only one who wants it. Such a pity, it looks such an ideal device for the 4x4 user who spend a lot of time in the city and country. I don't want to have to have two GPS devices in the car. Am I alone in the world, wanting a device like this that can output my position to other devices? :(

Gidday

I don't think your the only one, get several requets per week. There may be a way to make it work but we need to get our hands on one and have a play!

As an alternative we are working with the OziExplorer guys to get moving map working with a Garmin Nuvi as the engine.

Thanks guys for putting your experiences out there [I thought I was alone with the problem until I found this site] - I bought one in August 09 and the screen continually froze - sent it back in early Oct - they lost it - then found it - now they havn't got any replacements left so have promised me one of the new models when they release them sometime in Jan/Feb 2010.
Cant help being a bit sceptical about some new models performance when it appears they had so much trouble with the old one - just have to wait and see i suppose?

Thanks Brian for the interest and comments. I will obviously have to wait until January and you have time to play with it.
It seems that the good people at Hema just are ignoring the requests or could they be trying to "Spin" their way out of a comercial decision? Last year they told me that they do get a few calls about it, but unfortunately the (old) model could not do it. I recall that over 12 months ago this was discussed on various forums and the the customer demand was there for the industry standard NMEA output. Hema were certainly aware of it, but they now seem to be pleading Amnesia. I for one are looking for a similar solution that includes NMEA output. Anyone else? Please cast your vote.

Regards Philip.

The flip side of this argument is that why would you want it? you have a good platform already to display and navigate via say OziExplorer. I presume your adding laptop which really only gives you a larger screen. If this is the case buy a $100 USB gps . Did I miss something?

Bryan, Good question, I would like to use the output of the UPS for various other activities including APRS and other Amateur Radio activities. 50% of the time the mapping on the Hema device would be OK. I run other maps or the lap top and the moving map and other features come into there own. I am trying to not have to run two GPS devices in the car. It gets cluttered enough already. - Philip
